This was our first week without our Mandarin Program Leader, Mr Allen. Although we all miss him, I will have to call this week a success as we've transitioned smoothly with his students. Currently, I have identified one Spanish-speaking Program Leader and a Mandarin-speaking Tutor, who will both join our team! Please be on the look-out for their introductions to our Rising Starrs Program.
This week's announcements are:
1) I am not sure if your child comes home and tells you our day-to-day activities. This week's big development is that we've adopted a "Class Point System" that mimics Harry Potter's House Points. Once a class earns 15 points, they will celebrate with a Sundae Party! We kicked off this "Friday Funday" with a competition among our Program Leaders, where the winner earned a point for their class (Congrats Mr. Rainer & Mr. Damontae's class). If you know any "minute-to-win-it" type of games--I take suggestions!
2) Check out the enrichments tab and read about our new ELA course that's being headed by two Starr King Educators (Miss Sanderson & Ms. Monica)!
3) The current enrichment cycle ends Feb. 18th. Please be on the lookout for another online sign-up that will come out next week. There will be a basketball team that we will be recruiting for at this time too! I'll write more about this basketball team with the enrichment sign ups.
4) Have you checked out our wishlist? We have some asks from our parents. We've ran through a lot of our supplies for the year and would totally appreciate some donations. For example, students in our swimming enrichment ALWAYS end up starving when they're on the bus back from the Chinatown YMCA. There are also lots of students that come to the office, daily, looking for "extra snacks because they are starving". We'd love to be able to provide them a healthy snack in these instances! Also, a lot of our board games have gone through the ringer and are, therefore, broken &/or missing pieces. If you've got any old board games lying around that need a new home--we'd be happy to take them.
This week's reflection comes from Miss Alexsandra. Our Safety & Support staff, who has been doing a great job with Mr. Allen's class while we wait for our new team members to start. Please read below:
"My first experience teaching our blended 3rd-4th-5th grade class went great. I was pleasantly surprised! The kids welcomed me, and they listened to me (which was something I didn't expect would be SO easy)! We worked on homework, read books, and played some games where we could all get to know each other. Overall, my experience was really fun. This experience is making me want to become a Program Leader in the future."

Happy Friday! Here is a quick excerpt of the many activities we offer during our "Friday Fundays". Next Friday, we will celebrate with a "Heart Healthy Friday Funday" that will focus on physical activity to show how we love and honor ourselves for the Valentines Day weekend.
