Hello Rising Starrs Community
During one of our trivia questions this week, we realized that there are FOUR holidays (Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, Valentines' Day, and President's Day) in the month of February plus an entire month-long celebration of Black History! Needless to say, we are busy here.
Here are a couple updates and announcements
*Swimming was canceled this week, due to our bus driver calling out sick. Because we found out too late to find a replacement, we were unable to transport the students to Chinatown Y for their swimming enrichment. I apologize for this, especially if students went home and told you that they didn't go swimming "because they were being bad". Apparently, "Lost in Translation" happened. Swimming will resume next week on Tuesday.
*Violin, on Thursday (today), was canceled because our Instructor called out sick. Violin will resume next week on Tuesday.
*Supper Program will start at the Rising Starrs After School Program on Tuesday, February 16th. Supper program is an SFUSD-funded program, which provides a full meal during the After School hours. We will have supper available for all students enrolled in ASP. It will be provided by Revolution Foods (i.e. same as school-day lunch providers). We will now serve Supper at 2:40pm (right after school) and will have an additional snack available for students who are still in program past 5:00pm. They have vegetarian options, so please let me know if you prefer your child to receive a vegetarian supper.
*S.T.E.A.M. Night will be a joint collaboration between school-day and ASP this year! Thanks for making last year's a success--that now we're going to collaborate with school-day! Mark your calendars for April 19. If you would like to help run a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, or Math booth... PLEASE CONTACT ME ([email protected])! We will provide you with a booth to run (i.e. provide the materials and curriculum), unless you already have your own awesome idea.
*Summer Camp Registration has been launched for over a week! Stop by the cafeteria and fill out an application. Like in previous summers, Summer Camp will run for 6.5 weeks (June 1-July 16th). This year's theme will be Summer Olympics/Rio. We will go on at least one field trip every week. I'm also excited to announce that I am part of the YMCA STEM initiative. This summer, we are embedding a strong STEM/STEAM component into our camp days--and will culminate in a city-wide celebration (along with all the other YMCAs in SF) for an event called "Thingamajig". Click the link to see that we are modeling this after the YMCA of DC's event.
*3-day Weekends are coming! Have a great time, but please remember that we come back on TUESDAYS--meaning students in swimming (& violin) need to come to school/program with all of their enrichment gear.
LAST, but not least--THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Once again, several of you delivered on our call for donations. We are stocked up on disinfectant wipes--woohoo! Next up--I'm putting out a call for "film canisters". If you have access to walgreens/cvs or other photo developing places, then please ask their photo departments to save film canisters for us/you. We will be using them as rockets! We will also still take plastic caps. They make for great wheels!
